Artist's Statement

I manipulate the craft of jewellery by using my work as small art objects worn on the body/canvas. My work explores the theme of feminine identity in modern western culture. From an early age, small inviting objects have intrigued me and it seemed the natural choice to express myself through jewellery.

'The Hourglass' is describing how one toys with ones body to achieve beauty ideals. It can be taken apart and reassembled in various ways, thus the object becomes a playful toy. I used the hourglass shape to represent time and the female figure. 'The Hourglass' is made up of bars to create a cage to portray the constriction of societies expectations. I have investigated the application of make-up in the brooches 'Mask' and 'Mask II'. They are made of two interlocking almonds that are worn by trapping the clothing between them. I wanted to describe the face as a blank canvas capable of decoration. The Barbie hair ring is made from a basic cage frame, with various thicknesses of wire to represent a bar code, Barbie hair is then weaved around the wire to form a three dimensional object.

This piece is expressing the idea that a continuous commercial influence (bar code) from an early age (Barbie doll) has the effect of turning beauty into a female commodity.

I would like my work to incorporate an interactive aspect while inviting a psychological approach, for example a brooch taken from 'family of five' series contains an engraved mirror behind bars. When the onlooker/judge peers into the brooch, they become the trapped image in the cage, thus becoming the perceived/judged themselves.

I am currently fascinated by the female psyche and the influence of the unconscious mind on the development of the conscious. I am also interested in how social conditions build and shape personality. I hope to continue my work as a life long diary.
