Fish fascinate me - their colours, their scales, their eyes! I am intrigued by their shiny surfaces, intricate patterns and precisely 'drawn' scales. I am awe-inspired when I see them move - the way their bodies turn and the light bounces off them, silver flickers like little splinters of life. In the sea they are great shoals, drifting together, moving as a whole and then darting off into smaller groups; moving as flocks of birds do in the sky. On their own, they are vivid darting stitches of intense colour.
The still bodies of the 'market fish' offer the opportunity for close study; the incredible actuality of lines and marks and colours. A dazzling beauty.
The woven lengths that I make are composed of viscose rayon, a material reminiscent of iridescent fish bodies, chosen for its slippery shine and 'non twist' structure. Ideas are based around the quality of yarn, the density of cloth, space and composition. I am interested in the way the work reacts in light and how it responds to a breeze or the flow of air. This interplay of light and movement is important in the presentation of pieces - how they are positioned in relation to their surroundings.
I am attracted to the loom for its precision and control of thread. I am inspired by the linear quality of yarn, its purity and elegant beauty. Weaving, for me, is like drawing; building up marks with thread. It is absorbing and rhythmical. I am interested in the simplicity and serenity of a plain weave structure, an unbroken continuity.
Fish were my initial inspiration, and I would like my work to hold something of their quality - a sense of their shimmering bodies, their weight and energy. At the same time, I would like the pieces to become something in their own right; to take on a life of their own, offering possibilities unique to weaving and viscose yarn.
I hope that the group of works I have made are beautiful to look at and that they have a soothing and stilling presence.
