Artist's Statement

My work concerns figurative composition; the formal problems of figure and ground, space, colour and light, mark making. I'm looking to mix a colour, of the right consistency, and deliver it to the canvas with right weight and speed, so that it goes where I put it in illusionistic space but sits right there on the picture plane.

Surfaces can be heavily worked or done in one go. Images may be delineated or fragmented. My process involves building up forms and then dismantling them again. It's a cycle of drawing, breaking it down (when I don't know what I'm doing) and re-drawing. I use any means, techniques, media available to move the cycle on.

Autobiographical themes and images, memories, reflections. Utilising old drawings; recent drawings of my family; the landscape of Nottinghamshire, Cambridgeshire fens; travels in Kenya; photos taken by my dad in the '50s and '60s; Self Portraits.
