Work in Brief
Having spent a considerable length of time painting full-time, I now feel that I have arrived at an artistic vocabulary offering long term opportunities for study and development.
All my work stems from a desire to create an original object, something unique, as opposed to attempting to replicate or translate objects from their real form into a painted format. A significant contributor to this lies in the use of rectangles which, in accordance with Platonic thinking, are appropriately original forms true to themselves and not representations of other objects. I work on a large scale to emphasize the effects of the compositional tensions and harmonies between the rectangles and use mainly oil paints and sand to render them.
Inspiration to work comes often from artists such as Leonardo and Sean Scully and frequently from the beauty of everyday objects such as the rusted back panels of industrial vehicles, container units or the under-side of grounded boats.
With compositional investigation as the framework, and inspiration from the surrounding industrial and natural environment fleshing that structure out, my work represents the attempted amalgamation of the manmade and the organic.
