Portrait painting can be considered as a separate specialization in art; its importance resting as much on the quality of
the representation as on the painter's stylistic individuality.
My own approach has been informed by the idea that the physiognomy of the sitter can reveal the inner person, thus
placing due emphasis on likeness. This, however, involves more than a photographic record for it requires the artist to
reveal through perception the nature of the person.
I also attach importance to context. For instance, this might involve the surroundings or objects that are integral to the
life of the sitter, either to throw light on the private individual or as a reflection of the public figure.
