Point of Resolution is a pilot project to try to promote my idea of having growing sculpture along the length of the Southern Upland Way (which runs across the Scottish Borders from Port Patrick in the West to Cockburnspath in the East - a distance of 212 miles).

This growing sculpture (Point of Resolution) was funded by The Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway Councils. It was made on forestry Commission of Scotland land with their cooperation and assistance.

The growing sculpture is also a conservation project, as cutting back old heather and encouraging new growth improves the habitat for grouse particularly the Black Grouse.

My sculptural idea was to establish a fixed viewing point (the resolution point) and then from there cut a series of what appear to be circles or rings in the heather. However once the viewer moves away from that point it becomes apparent that what can be seen are not circles at all but huge irregular ovals. The dimensions of the largest of the forms illustrates this point (150 meters long but only 30 meters wide). The forms cut in the heather will change over time with the new heather coming through and the flowering of the heather will change the experience. The growing sculpture is likely to be visible for many years to come.
