Artist's Statement

Born in Marengo, Algeria (Albert Camus, L'Étranger) on September 27th, 1942, I'm a self-taught painter, attracted by expressionism. I began oil painting in 1988 while living in Tubingen, West Germany.
Inspired by the numerous countries in which I have lived, I'm able to delve into the recesses of myself through my work.
The experiences of light and movement in generous and happy colours are found across my different themes; the settings of North Africa, South America, the Caribbean, Tahiti and North America; and the recurring subjects of music, dance and women.
In Berlin, I first started working on a series dedicated to the Blues (from the beginning of the 20th Century to Miles Davis); until then, my passion for music had not begun to come through in my painting.
I am attracted to the light of the Caribbean, and by women and men facing each other during the dance ceremony. The Latin American influence on my work is a blend of music, ethnology and identity developed in my oriental and blues paintings.
It's important to mention my natural daily interest in human actions. My eyes are focused on the beat of the heart. I am a spontaneous painter, sensitive to each new situation but at the same time making use of the knowledge and experience of my life and travels to create my own vision.
My art is a figurative expression made with great care to the texture of each piece. I restict my technique to oil on canvas applied with the pallette knife.
From Morocco to New Orleans, with my joyful palette of rich ochres, deep ultramarines - hot, warm, cold colours dominated by a combination of saffron, glossy blue and fuchsia - I invite you to share my spicy taste for life.
