About Artmatters

Artmatters was established in 1991 to provide independent art advice to the public, private and cultural sectors. Over fifty art projects have now been completed drawing on the work of more than three hundred contemporary visual artists, helping to redefine numerous organisations and touching the lives of many people, young and old. Major clients have included the energy company Conoco and Warwickshire County Council. The most recent project has included the planning and implementation of four major art commissions - Northern Landmark, Interior hub, Story of the Site and Lighting for the building - at Millennium Point Property Ltd., Birmingham UK.

Artmatters creates links between contemporary artists seeking a public platform for their work and ideas, and patrons of art.

Artists include painters, sculptors, printmakers, craftspeople, photographers, performance artists and public artists.

Artmatters clients are collectors, corporations and companies, arts organisations, local autorities, education and health sectors.

As a promoting agency, Artmatters specialises in fine art and applied art acquisitions and sales, site specific commissions, exhibitions, and educational activities.

As consultants, Artmatters offers advice and support to clients and artists on all aspects of visual art planning, programming, management, marketing and finance.

Artmatters operates internationally and is not tied to particular artists but instead researches the most appropriate artists for each project; drawing on the highest calibre expertise of freelance arts professionals on a project basis.

Artmatters is directed by Julie Seddon Jones MA, a leading expert in contemporary visual art practice, development and cultural management. Julie Seddon Jones has experience both in the commercial art sector (having worked for galleries in London and Germany) and in the public sector as Visual Arts Officer with West Midlands Arts.

Achievements with West Midlands Arts from 1988 - 1991 included working with artists, curators and local authority officers to secure a sustainable regional infrastructure for networking, funding and arts development. From 1985-1987 Julie pioneered a nationally acclaimed hospital art project at Southampton General hospital featuring keynote public art commissions such as Patrick Hughes's Rainbow Room and a fundraising campaign spearheaded by Linda McCartney.

As a freelance curator and researcher from 1981- 1983 Julie worked for the Bavarian National Museum and Deutsches Museum in Munich; in 1985, also for the Serpentine Gallery and Whitechapel Art Gallery, London. Julie read Art history and German at University College London with an MA in Art History at Sussex in 1984.
