Hush House - Weaver Street Chester UK

The Sculptor's approach was that his work should complement 'the simple severity of the architect's design' and that it should highlight the change in function of the building from a place of business (the new building is based on the frame of an old office block) to a place where people live. With this in mind and also being mindful of the traditional use of texts on buildings in Chester the sculptor chose the words 'hush' and 'house'. The sculpture repeats these words over three lines but their continuity is upset at every sixth panel by providing a wider gap between the panels. The letter which falls on this space is dropped therefore breaking the repeat. This brings unexpected words and sounds out of the core 'mantra' making a kind of sound poem out of the two words.

Architects for 'Hush House were Ian Simpson Architects (project architect Jacquie Milham) for Simon Macbryde. The rest of the lead work on the building was done by Carlton Ltd.

The name of the building was changed on completion to 'Hush House' after the title of the sculpture.
