The Cotton Centre completed in July 1986 by architects Twigg and Brown houses various banks and is a building within a glass shell. This allows for excellent daylight throughout the atrium area. Leading back and down from this area is a basement level approached by escalators obliquely above which is a window approximately 3.5 m. high and 8 m. wide.

The proposal utilizes the window above the basement floor escalators to enhance the light entering and also to lessen the dominating view of the building behind. The aim of the design is also not to block out too much of the incoming light. The design would be powerful enough to draw one forward and downward as well as to emphasize the areas to the sides of the window.
It is to be seen from all approaches offering different perspectives from all views. The three dimensionality of the design would allow for reflection onto itself creating a criss-crossing of colour and pattern according to where the light is situated. Therefore movement would exist in its reflection at different times of the day.
The layering of the design into a flat plane and a three dimensional plane refers back to economic stratification. The predominantly blue area has a double layered reference to the river at the front of the building and also to the economy. The three dimensional part is a reference to fluidity; economic fluidity the movement of the river and pedestrian traffic throughout the building. The circular part of the structure is an eddy in this movement such as a pebble being dropped into a pool or a whirlpool of motion extending worldwide.
